Fighting Arkansas SB486 - The Anti-Trans Bathroom and Shelter Law

Description

This bill has already passed the senate and is being discussed in the House State Agencies + Governmental Affairs Committee TODAY.

SB468 bans trans people from bathrooms, changing rooms, and sleeping quarters in public buildings, prisons, and shelters. It includes a provision so that if a cis person encounters a trans person in a bathroom, they have a private right-of-action to sue the facility for up to two years after the incident. Private businesses will be exempt, but public places (like the university/library/courthouse) will be subject to this law.

It's also going to force trans victims of domestic violence out of women's shelter, despite trans women being one of the most at-risk demographics for domestic violence and homelessness.

I want to be clear that there have been NO recorded issues or controversies over trans people in bathrooms or shelters in Arkansas. It's an entirely made-up problem. It's an excuse to drive division and give the political right and enemy to work against.

Representative Mary Bentley of Perryville was presenting the trans bathroom bill today and was asked about the cost of compliance for higher education institutions.

Talking about universities she said: "we have addressed their concerns and at this point I have no opposition from any agency across the state"

What You Can Do

We desperately need people to call their representatives and block this. We also need people willing to speak out against the law at the capitol. A date and time to show up has not yet been determined, but I will update this page as soon as I find out.
